Stranger Makes a Single Mom's Day with a Free Meal

The note left by a stranger.
Sometimes you find kindness in the most unexpected places - even a Pizza Hut!
A single mother from Raleigh, North Carolina wrote to ABC11 to share the incredible experience she had at the pizza chain while dining with her children.

Despite going through a difficult time - she's in the middle of a messy divorce and was forced to move several times - the woman always makes the effort to go out to dinner with her kids every Friday. She recently brought her kids straight from school and daycare to Pizza Hut, when her son's ADHD medication was wearing off.

The woman apologized in advance to a young man seated alone in a nearby booth, worried her children would begin to get rowdy and loud. He replied that he didn't mind, as he had three children of his own.

The woman and her children continued with their meal, with the mother trying the best she could to engage with her kids to keep them on their best behavior. Meanwhile, the young man finished his dinner and left.

At the end of their meal, instead of bringing over the check, the family's waitress came over and said the young man had already paid their bill. He also left them a Pizza Hut gift card and a three-page handwritten letter:

"I do not know your back story, but I have had the privilege of watching you parent your children for the past 30 minutes. I have to say thank you for parenting your children in such a loving manner."

"I have watched you teach your children about the importance of respect, education, proper manners, communication, self control, and kindness all while being very patient," he continued. "I will never cross your path again but am positive that you and your children have amazing futures."

He concludes, "Keep up the good work, and when it starts to get tough, do not forget that others may be watching and will need the encouragement of seeing a good family being raised. God bless! -Jake"

With all the hardship life can bring you, this story shows that good things can happen to you just as easily!

How Cruise Lines Fill All Those Unsold Cabins?

Take a Luxury Cruise at a deep discount — up to 80% Off

article5Savvy travelers know that a cruise is a vacation without equal. With modern cruise lines pumping millions of dollars into their fleets, today’s cruise ships are floating resorts, with well-appointed cabins, multiple restaurants, daytime and nighttime entertainment and kids’ clubs for younger guests. Plus, you get to visit several exciting destinations on one vacation!
A cruise is an amazing experience. But you know what’s even better? Getting that cruise at an incredible discount — up to 80% off!
Is this really possible? It is with a company called Vacations To Go, the world’s largest seller of cruises.
In business since 1984, Vacations To Go offers smart travelers deeply discounted cruises from all the major cruise lines. You can save on every ship and sailing to the world’s most popular destinations. Browse and compare different cruise lines, ships, cabin categories and itineraries. The only difference between what Vacations To Go offers and what other companies offer is the price you pay.
Cruise ships have a certain number of cabins, and the goal is to always sail full. But that just doesn’t always happen on these large, modern cruise ships.
The ship is still going to sail whether all the cabins are filled or not. At a certain point, the cruise line would much rather sell any remaining cabins at a discount than let them stay empty — getting a small amount for a cabin is better than getting nothing at all. However, if the line just lowers the price, customers who already paid a higher fare will not be happy.
This is where Vacations To Go comes in. The company is authorized to offer these unsold cabins to its registered customers, who then get a top-shelf vacation for a fraction of the regular price. Cruise lines like this arrangement because they don’t have to worry about unsold cabins, and sharp-thinking travelers who have registered with Vacations To Go love the exclusive rates (signing up is completely free of charge, by the way).
And don’t think these deals are just for tiny inside cabins. In fact, every level of cabin hits the unsold list; we see balcony cabins and suites go for huge discounts, too. The Vacations To Go website is constantly updated with new markdowns and cut-rate deals. There are also special rates for travelers ages 55 and up, past cruisers, airline employees, military personnel, residents of select states, police officers and other groups. The company promises that you’ll get the lowest rate with its “Best Price & Service” guarantee.
To be informed of the latest news and special offers, you can register for Vacations To Go’s
free cruise newsletter. And by signing up, you’ll be part of the privileged group that gets access to special unpublished discounts. Before you know it, you’ll be cruising the open sea — with lots of money left over!

Teen Orphan Tugs at Churchgoers' Heartstrings to Find a Family

Davion Navar (photo by: MELISSA LYTTLE/ZUMApress)A 15-year-old Florida boy who's been in foster care his entire life is so desperate for a family to call his own, that he recently took matters into his own hands.
Davion Navar Henry Only gathered his courage and stepped up to the pulpit at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in St. Petersberg, Florida, asking, directly, if anyone there might want to adopt him. He told the parishioners, "I know God hasn't given up on me. So I'm not giving up, either."

After learning that his biological mother, who gave birth to him while she was in prison, had passed away, he asked his caseworker, Connie Going, to take him to church so that he could make his request. She agreed.

Arriving in a donated black suit too large for him, wearing a zip-on tie that he wouldn't have known how to tie himself, he followed intently along with the sermon before declaring, "I'll take anyone. Old or young, dad or mom, black, white, purple. I don't care. And I would be really appreciative. The best I could be."

Davion Navar and Connie Going, his Eckerd case worker (photo by: MELISSA LYTTLE/ZUMApress)

In a piece that ran in the Tampa Bay Times earlier this month, reporter Lane DeGregory recounts that the boy was shy, but he was determined to speak at the church.

His mother had been in jail on petty theft and cocaine charges when he was born. After his 15 years in foster care, Davion looked her up for the first time and found out that she had died. Since then, he's been working to manage his temper and pick up the grades he let slump.

He couldn't let nerves and shyness deter him from showing the people in the pews that he could become somebody's son. So he walked to the front of the church, and he let his earnestness speak.

The Tampa Bay Times story detailing Davion's plight has gone viral. The piece got 14,000 shares on Facebook just from the paper's page, and thousands more from aggregation in the Daily Mail, ABC News, People magazine and others. His story has even been shared in Australian media.

If this were a movie, the happy ending would place Davion within a warm household, where he would learn to be loved and continue to ace his way through high school. But whether or not his brave stunt will earn him a home in real life remains to be seen.

Connie Going, the Eckerd adoption specialist in charge of Davion's case, could not be reached for comment, but data from the Administration for Children and Families' Children's Bureau suggests that Davion's chances aren't great.

An agency report shows that black and Hispanic children made up the majority of kids in foster care at the end of the 2012 fiscal year. And out of 400,000 children in foster care last year, only 52,000 were adopted.

The Times reported that two couples asked about Davion at the time his story was published, but none neither had moved forward with an adoption.

Florida Department of Children and Families spokesperson Terri Durdaller said the agency got around 300 calls about Davion earlier this week. Since then, the number has risen to "several hundred."

"We hope everyone who calls is a potential parent," Durdaller said. "We're hoping to connect him with a forever family and that this will bring recognition to the foster system in Florida."

For more information on Davion or any of the foster children at Eckerd, call 866-233-0790 or visit Eckerd.org.

Are you Addicted??..Oreos the Next Target in the War on Drugs

Mondelez sells more Oreos but struggles with gum

Those cookie crumbs clinging to the corners of little Timmy's mouth may be the telltale sign of a full-blown addiction -- especially if they're Oreo crumbs.

According to a study from students and professors at Connecticut College, lab rats find Oreo cookies to be as addictive as cocaine.

"Our reserach supports the theory that high-fat/high-sugar foods stimulate the brain in the same way that drugs do," said Joseph Schroeder, associate professor of Neuroscience at Connecticut College.

See Also: Top 10 Scariest Food Additives

Neuroscience major Jamie Honohan was interested in taking a look at how high-fat, high-sugar foods contributed to the obesity epidemic in low-income areas. And when you're looking for high-fat, high-sugar foods, what could be better than an Oreo? Honohan adds that Oreos are "highly palatable to rats," which means we can all start ditching the cheese in our traps.

To test the addictive powers of Oreos, the rats were run through a maze. On one end of the maze, the rats were offered Oreos, on the other, rice cakes. Another test group was given an injection of cocaine or morphine on one side, and a shot of saline on the other. It seems that the rats spent just as much extra time hanging out on the Oreo side of the maze as the other mice did on the cocaine side.

"And just like most humans, rats go for the middle first," reads Connecticut College's own coverage of the study.

Cookies of any sort are, understandably, already considered one of the most addictive foods. According to Prevention, the other most addictive foods include white bread, donuts, pasta and chips. A single serving of Oreos is generally considered to be around three cookies, which delivers 14 grams of sugar and seven grams of fat.

Oreo is owned by Mondelez International's (MDLZ) Nabisco subsidiary, a billion-dollar business that also churns out Chips Ahoy cookies and Ritz crackers. The odds that anybody will be shocked by the fact that lab mice, and people too, would prefer cookies over rice cakes isn't likely to hurt the stock. Shares of Mondelez have risen 14.6% for the year-to-date.

6 Jobs That Pay Surprisingly Well - No Bachelor's Needed

6 Jobs That Pay Surprisingly Well - No Bachelor's Needed

Great Jobs, No Bachelor's Needed

A four-year degree isn't the only way to make a decent income. Here are six occupations that pay surprisingly well.

By Lia Sestric
Don't settle on a low-paying career just because you don't have a bachelor's degree. Metaphorically speaking, when life throws you a curve ball, don't put down your bat - keep playing the game!
Whether you can't afford or can't give the time to earning a bachelor's degree, take comfort in knowing it's not the only way to earn a decent paycheck. There are less time-consuming alternatives that could prep you to pursue a lucrative career.
"There are many different ways to end up in the position of being happy with your career and the pay that comes with it," says Bill Peppler, managing partner for Kavaliro, an Orlando-based staffing agency.
"Some of these routes may go through a four-year bachelor's degree, others may not. There is not just one specific plan for everyone to become successful, there are multiple tracks."
Are you ready to find out how you can track down the right one for you? We got you covered. Here are six careers that are short on school, but big on pay.

Career #1: Paralegal

Median Annual Salary*:
$46,990
Top 10 Percent of Earners:
$75,410
Bottom 10 Percent of Earners:
$29,420
Who says you have to make partner at a law firm to make a decent living? As a paralegal, you could bypass law school and get right to making a decent paycheck just by assisting a lawyer at the office. Job Duties: The U.S. Department of Labor says a paralegal supports a lawyer in a number of ways, from maintaining and organizing files to investigating facts of a case and helping lawyers prepare for trials.
Why It Pays: A lawyer needs a highly skilled individual to handle the workload that has no room for error, says career coach Lavie Margolin, author of "Lion Cub Job Search: Practical Job Search Assistance for Practical Job Seekers." Paralegals are compensated for their "attention to detail, ability to work in a deadline driven environment, and [ability to] multi-task."
Plus, demand for this skill set will likely stay strong, says Margolin. "As long as there is a need for lawyers and the legal system, there will be a need for paralegals to help support them."
Next step: Click to Find the Right Paralegal Program.
Education Requirements: How long does it take to prepare for a career as a paralegal? Not as long as you may think. The Department of Labor says many paralegals have an associate's degree or a certificate in paralegal studies. Keep in mind, however, that those with the certificate also have a bachelor's degree in another subject.

Career #2: Computer Support Specialist

Median Annual Salary*:
$46,420
Top 10 Percent of Earners:
$77,430
Bottom 10 Percent of Earners:
$27,620
Can you solve problems and keep your cool? A computer support specialist should be programmed to handle any technical break down. The good news is these professionals don't necessarily need a four-year degree to master the field.
Job Duties: "Computer support specialists provide help and advice to people and organizations using computer software or equipment," says the U.S. Department of Labor. There are two types of computer support specialists: technical support specialists and help-desk technicians.
Technical support technicians support IT employees within their organization by testing and evaluating existing network systems and performing regular maintenance. On the other hand, help-desk technicians assist non-IT users who are having computer problems by walking them through the steps to fix them, says the Department of Labor.
Why It Pays: We all know that technology fails us at times. So it's no surprise that Margolin says competent computer specialists are often needed at a moment's notice. "People are willing to pay to get their technology back up and running smoothly," he says. "It's worth paying a person a good price who is capable of doing that."
Next step: Click to Find the Right Computer Science Program.
Education Requirements: Although many employers prefer a bachelor's degree, the Department of Labor says an associate's or post-secondary classes may be enough to pursue this career. For more technical positions, degrees in computer science, engineering, or information science may be required. After they're hired, new computer support specialists typically enter a training program.

Career #3: Dental Hygienist

Median Annual Salary*:
$70,210
Top 10 Percent of Earners:
$96,280
Bottom 10 Percent of Earners:
$46,540
Going to dental school isn't the only way to get into the lucrative field of dentistry. In fact, you could pursue a lucrative career as a dental hygienist and skip many of those years of schooling.
Job Duties: As a dental hygienist, you might "clean teeth, examine patients for oral diseases such as gingivitis, and provide other preventative dental care," says the U.S. Department of Labor. A dental hygienist also educates patients about oral health.
Why It Pays: Dental hygienists have the bulk of the interaction with patients, and people don't want just anyone poking around in there. This is why the pay is high says Michael Echols, author of "Your Future is Calling," because the career demands a lot. "In addition to technical training required to do the work on a day to day basis, personality attributes that align with the requirements of the job are important. These include displaying a good-natured and cooperative attitude."
Next step: Click to Find the Right Dental Hygiene Program.
Education Requirements: Ready to start scraping teeth? The Department of Labor says an associate's degree in dental hygiene is typically needed to enter the profession. Every state requires these professionals to be licensed, but exact requirements vary, notes the Department.

Career #4: Police Officer

Median Annual Salary*:
$55,270
Top 10 Percent of Earners:
$89,310
Bottom 10 Percent of Earners:
$32,350
Police officers uphold the law, catch bad guys, and have high earning possibilities for the service they provide to the community. And get this: You don't have to go through several years of school if you want to pursue the career. Job Duties: A police officer does more than arrest suspects. They respond to calls for service, patrol assigned areas, conduct traffic stops, and issue citations, says the U.S. Department of Labor.
Why It Pays: Upholding the law is serious business. "Being a police officer is extremely demanding and a dangerous field," says Margolin. "It involves a lot of sacrifice and a good salary is required for recruiting the right people."
Next step: Click to Find the Right Criminal Justice Program.
Education Requirements: What does it take to flash a shiny badge? The Department of Labor says a police officer must at least have a diploma or GED and graduate from an agency's training academy. However, many agencies do require a college degree or some coursework. Candidates usually are at least 21-years-old, "and meet rigorous physical and personal qualifications," the Department adds.

Career #5: Physical Therapy Assistant

Median Annual Salary*:
$52,160
Top 10 Percent of Earners:
$72,720
Bottom 10 Percent of Earners:
$32,420
Want to help a person recover from injury through strength-training activities? A physical therapy assistant rehabilitates patients under the supervision of a physical therapist, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. If you like the idea of being a helpful sidekick, you may like it even more knowing you can earn a decent paycheck that doesn't cost you years of schooling. Job Duties: In a nutshell, a physical therapy assistant shows a patient the ropes while keeping tabs on their status. They may help patients overcome injuries by assisting them with various exercises, says the Department of Labor.
Why It Pays: A physical therapist needs supportive personnel to handle the demands of the job, says Margolin. And that's where physical therapist assistants come in.
"It is worthwhile for PT offices to pay PTAs a reasonable salary, as a PTA saves the practice money by taking over the basic duties and allowing the PT to focus on the work that requires more technical/scientific know-how. The job of PTA is also physically demanding and the salary must correspond with that."
Next step: Click to Find the Right Physical Therapy Assistant Program.
Education Requirements: What does it take to jump into this profitable career? You may want to start by earning an associate's from an accredited physical therapist program. Most states require that in addition to licensure, says the Department.

Career #6: Construction Manager

Median Annual Salary*:
$82,790
Top 10 Percent of Earners:
$144,520
Bottom 10 Percent of Earners:
$49,680
We all know buildings are not constructed out of thin air. There has to be a person who spearheads the project and keeps it in motion. If being at a construction site to watch every piece form together excites you, pursuing a career as a construction manager might be a good move. Plus it has high earning potential and could require less time in school.
Job Duties: This job requires more than wearing a hard hat. A construction manager coordinates and supervises a wide variety of projects, says the U.S. Department of Labor. These could be residential, commercial, or public, like the construction of a bridge. Specifically, they prepare budgets, select the appropriate construction method for the project, and supervise construction personnel onsite.
Why It Pays: In the lucrative world of real estate, construction managers bring a lot of value to property owners, says Margolin.
"Construction management is a uniquely demanding field, as one must have knowledge of a variety of areas," he says. Construction managers need "enough vocational knowledge to observe the work of various contractors and assess if they are performing the job correctly," and they must have "the ability to manage others in a physically demanding environment with tight budgets and deadline constraints." They also need to be aware of safety and construction regulations to be effective, he says.
Next step: Click to Find the Right Construction Management Program.
Education Requirements: The Department of Labor says an associate's degree combined with work experience may be enough for some positions. The Department also notes that "those with a high school diploma and years of relevant work experience will be able to work as construction managers, though they will do so primarily as self-employed general contractors." The Department points out that as construction processes are becoming more complex, a bachelor's degree is growing in importance.

Apple iPad rumor roundup: What we know so far

Hey, new Kindle Fire? Get ready for some competition.

A hot new rumor from the redoubtable Apple reporter John Paczkowski indicates that Apple is planning an event for Oct. 22, at which it is expected to announced its new line of iPads. Specifically, rumors suggest that the company will introduce a fifth-generation iPad, an iPad mini 2, a new iMac and a new Mac Pro at the Tuesday event.

So: What can you expect from those new iDevices? Well, with a special focus on the two updated tablets, here's what we're looking for on Oct. 22, based on all the leaks and gossip in the ever-active Apple rumor mill.
The new iPad 5 (or fifth generation) will look a whole lot more like a larger iPad mini, with the side bezels on the new iPad shrunk down quite a bit, reports BGR. That will be the big cosmetic change; and, according to The Wall Street Journal, though Apple's full-size tablet will feature the same 9.7-inch LCD Retina display as its predecessor, it should be lighter and a bit thinner, too, thanks to new in-screen technology.

.
Supposed leaked photo of the second-generation iPad mini

As for the iPad mini 2, Reuters has reported that Apple also plans to add Retina displays, addressing a major perceived weakness of the first version of Apple's smaller iPad; shortages in component manufacturing, however, may delay the large-scale release. You know what means? Long lines and wait times for the new iPad mini when it is first available. Videos and images of the alleged casing materials of the new iPad and iPad mini, courtesy of iPhone 5s and 5c rumor source Sonny Dickson, show that the color options may match some of the new iPhone 5s options, coming in space gray, gold and silver. And though there's been much speculation about whether the new iPads will come packed with Apple's Touch ID finger print sensor, the video below, from Unbox Therapy's Lewis Hilsenteger, shows that the new iPad casing he was able to get his hands on fits perfectly with the Touch ID component pulled from his iPhone 5s.Apple's newest iPad has traditionally been shipped with the latest installment of its A-chip processor — iPad 2 debuted the A5, iPad 3 the A5X and the fourth generation iPad the A6X — but the iPad mini was introduced last year with the year-and-a-half-old A5. This time around, analysts say, Apple plans to bring all new devices up to speed with its 64-bit architecture, with either an A7 or A7X processor. Dickson has also tweeted that the iPad mini will ship with a 64-bit A7 processor. The cameras on the new iPads may also get a spec bump, bringing them up to speed with the new iPhone 5s shooter, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. "We expect the upgrade will include 8MP rear camera, up from 5MP, and larger aperture. Lens module ASP will rise 10-20% on this optics spec upgrade," he said in a report obtained by 9to5Mac.

The purported Oct. 22 Apple event would fall on the same date as Microsoft's release of the new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets. Will you be out grabbing a Surface, or will you be waiting to see what Apple actually delivers before making your next tablet decision?

Los Angeles students get iPads for classroom, play video games instead

You have to give school officials in Los Angeles credit for a good idea: put iPads in the hands of over 650,000 students to give them the most advanced learning tools available in an effort to boost their interest in academics.

But the $1 billion plan is taking some heat after students in the nation's second-largest school district cracked the tablets’ security settings to forgo reading, writing and ‘rithmetic and instead post on Facebook and play games during class time.

"They kind of should have known this would happen," said Maria Aguilera, a student at one of the schools where games briefly replaced academia. "We're high school students after all. I mean, come on."

The top game choices? Temple Run, Subway Surfing and an unnamed car racing game.

The program's goal is to put an iPad in the hands of every student and teacher in the district’s 1,000 schools by next year. Officials say they were hoping to assist students in a district where 80 percent of the students come from low-income families.

While some might shrug their shoulders and give the kids credit for pulling a fast one on officials, others are taking the Los Angeles Unified School District to task for trying to do too much, too fast.

"It doesn't seem like there was much planning that went into this strategy," said Renee Hobbs, director of the Harrington School of Communication and Media at the University of Rhode Island. "That's where the debacle began."

School officials, as you might expect, quickly confiscated the iPads and went to work improving the security settings.

Apple has worked with several school districts around the country to incorporate the iPad into the classroom, with some schools starting students on them as early as kindergarten. There is an extensive app library dedicated to learning on a variety of topics.

Apple founder Steve Jobs was a big advocate of using the iPad in schools before his death two years ago. One of his goals was to circumvent the state certification process for textbook sales by having Apple release textbooks for free on the tablet computer.

20 unusual facts about relationships

20 unusual facts about relationships

Relationships are endlessly quirky and fascinating, because they’re full of twists, turns and wacky traditions. It’s fun to think about how everything from the seasons to our brain chemistry affects our love lives. Did you ever wonder if your love habits and history fall in with mainstream America? Read on for some truly unusual and funny facts about the wily beast that we call love and romantic relationships…

Fact #1: According to a Facebook study conducted by TED talker and data journalist David McCandless, spikes in breakups happen in spring and right before the holidays. The lowest amount of breakups happens between the end of July and beginning of October.

Fact #2: Paul Davis, author of Breakthrough for a Broken Heart: Overcome Your Disappointments and Blossom into Your Dreams, says that on average, 12 to 14 dates occur before couples trade house keys.

Fact #3: According to a meta-analysis study conducted by Syracuse University professor Stephanie Ortigue, falling in love can bring about the same euphoric feeling as using cocaine, and it only takes about a fifth of a second. When a person falls in love, 12 different areas of the brain work together to release chemicals such as dopamine, oxytocin, adrenaline and vasopressin into that individual’s body. The feeling of love also affects cognitive functions, such as mental representation, metaphors and body image. Passionate love is sparked by the reward part of the brain.

Fact #4: Per the American Express Spending and Saving Tracker’s 2013 consumer report, six million couples got engaged on Feb. 14, 2013 — up from four million couples in 2012.

Fact #5: “Many of us have a conscious list of what we want in a partner, but we also have an unconscious one that fulfills a part of us that we have not yet developed. Often times, this has to do with feelings that are familiar and partners that are similar to one of our parents in some way,” says licensed psychologist Rachel Needle, Psy.D.

Fact #6: Author Myrna Lou Goldbaum says that 10% of marriage proposals are made by women.

Fact #7: According to author Amber Madison, 95% of men say that they want to get married someday.

Fact #8: “Psychologists at the University of Pennsylvania studied data from over 10,000 speed daters and found that most people make a decision regarding a person’s attraction within the first three seconds of meeting,” says licensed psychologist Rachel Needle, Psy.D.

Fact #9: In an article published by The Washington Post, pediatrician and author Howard Bennett says that the butterflies you feel in your stomach when you encounter the person you love or lust after is the body’s stress response, and it’s caused by the release of adrenalin.

Fact #10: According to the American Express Spending and Saving Tracker’s 2013 consumer report, 30% of women in relationships believe that Valentine’s Day is overrated.

Fact #11: The American Community Survey states that as of 2011, 19.5% of people have ever been married twice, while 5% have married three or more times. By comparison, 75.3% of people who have ever been married have made only one trip down the aisle.

Fact #12: In Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott’s new book, The Good Fight: How Conflict Can Bring You Closer, the married co-authors assert that all couples fight over the same five things: money, sex, work, parenting and housework. Most argue about these five issues over and over again, mainly because they are so-called “hot buttons” — i.e., stressors that speak to our sense of love and fairness.

Fact #13: “Couples have worn wedding bands on the fourth finger of their left hands since the Ancient Egyptians began doing so over 5,000 years ago,” says Carol Bruess, author of What Happy Couples Do. “They believed there was a vein in this finger that went directly to the heart.”

Fact #14: According to author Myrna Lou Goldbaum, 81% of married couples make it past the first five years, 53% last for 15 years, and 6% stay together for over 50 years.

Fact #15: “Trust in personal relationships comes in two forms: 1) reflective trust, which is the form that operates at the level of your conscious awareness; and 2) impulsive trust, which is an unconscious form of trust.”
– SUNY Buffalo psychologist Sandra Murray and her colleagues as quoted by Susan Krauss Whitbourne, Ph.D. in Psychology Today, 2011

Fact #16: A column written by Joshua Foer published in The New York Times states that one study found that men who kiss their wives before leaving for work get into fewer car accidents, have a higher income and live longer than married men who don’t do so.

Fact #17: Table B110 of the 2010 American Community Survey shows that there were 6.8 million unmarried-partner households in 2010. Of this number, 593,000 were same-sex households.

Fact #18: “According to Dr. John Gottman, the best predictor of divorce is when one or both partners show feelings of contempt in the relationship,” says licensed psychologist Rachel Needle, Psy.D.

Fact #19: “Five big reasons that new relationships fail to launch: 1) the new couple may differ in ambition; 2) daters may differ in openness to new experiences; 3) daters may differ in emotional intelligence; 4) daters may differ in sociability; and finally, 5) partners may differ in altruism or agreeableness,” says psychologist Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, Ph.D., expert social scientist and contributor to Psychology Today.

Fact #20: Research from the University in Vienna reported in the UK’s Daily Mail shows that hugging someone you love releases the feel-good chemical oxytocin. It also lowers blood pressure, reduces stress and anxiety, and can help improve memory.

The hornets of your nightmares: Swarms of massive insects kill more than 40 and injure 1,600 in China

Swarms of deadly hornets have killed more than 40 people and injured more than 1,600 in northern China.

At least 37 patients are in a critical or serious condition in hospitals, according to Shaanxi provincial government.

Victims of the attack have been left with deep, dark craters in their skin the size of bullet wounds.

Over the past three months the cities of Angkang, Hanzhong and Shangluo have been worst affected.

The Chinese term for hornets is 'hu feng' and local experts believe the culprit is the Asian giant hornet or Vespa mandarinia, which grows up to 5cm long with a 6mm sting.
The insects' highly toxic stings can lead to anaphylactic shock and renal failure.

One victim told local media that 'the more you run, the more they want to chase you' and some victims described being chased about 200 metres (656 feet) by the deadly insects.

Authorities have mobilised a special medic team and trained more medical personnel to treat victims.

An Ankang official told Xinhua that firefighters have been removing hornet nests.

The provincial government said hornets are most aggressive in behaviour when they mate and migrate in September and October.

The dry and warm weather this year has contributed to the ferocity of attacks.

HUN FENG: DEADLY ASIAN HORNETS

The Chinese term for hornets is 'hu feng'.
Those behind the deadly attacks this summer appear to be the Asian giant hornet, or Vespa mandarinia.
The Asian giant hornet grows up to 5cm long with a 6mm sting  which injects a large amount of potent venom.
The hornet sting can be extremely painful to humans and has been compared to a hot nail being hammered into the body,
The head of the hornet is orange and quite wide in comparison to other hornet species.
The Asian giant hornet is intensely predatory; it hunts medium- to large-sized insects, such as bees, other hornet species, and mantises.
Hornets are most aggressive in behavior when they mate and migrate in September and October.
Attacks are difficult to prevent because hornet nests are usually in hidden sites.

One of the victims, named only as Mu, said she has spent two months in a hospital undergoing 13 dialysis treatments.

She has 200 stitches, but still can not move her legs.

She told Xinhua, the Chinese state-run news agency: 'The hornets were horrifying'.

'They hit right at my head and covered my legs. All of a sudden I was stung and I couldn't move.

'Even now, my legs are covered with sting holes.'

'Most of the deaths are due to allergies to the venom, said Shunichi Makino, director general of the Hokkaido Research Centre for Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, told
CNN.

'It's very difficult to prevent the attacks because hornet nests are usually in hidden sites,' he said.

'The venom of an Asian giant hornet is very special compared with other hornets or yellow jackets,' he warned.

'The neurotoxin -- especially to mammals including humans -- it's a special brand of venom.'

Meanwhile fears are growing that giant Asian hornets are headed for Britain.

The species is four times the size of our native honeybees and has decimated the bee population in France.

The dark invaders with yellow feet are thought to have arrive in France in a delivery of Chinese pottery from the Far East in late 2004.

The insects have colonised huge swathes of France, spreading along waterways, and with a few hornets capable of destroying 30,000 bees in a couple of hours, honey production has plummeted.

It has colonised 39 of France’s 100 administrative departments.

The hornets pick on honeybees as they leave their hive until the colony is so exhausted that the hornets can move in and ransack it.

Groups of Asian hornets hover in front of a beehive, picking off single honeybees, decapitating them and stripping off their wings and legs before making off with the 'meat ball' to feed their young.

It is a further problem for the British honeybee, which is struggling to cope with changes in farming and climate and already has one Far Eastern invader to contend with - the varroa mite, which feeds on the bees and makes their hives more vulnerable to disease.

8-Year-Old Boy Rewarded for Returning $1,450 to Happy Owner

And the two — who found $1,450 in cash but immediately turned it over to police — passed with flying colors, receiving a reward for their honesty last week.

“I grew up in this town and raised my kids here, and it really is the place it is because of people like Max’s parents, who used the opportunity to teach him, hey, we could put it in our pockets, but no, we all take care of each other,” Cheri Smith, the Exeter proprietor whose money was lost and found, told Yahoo Shine. She left a thank-you note with $100 at the local police station to convey her gratitude.

Smith, who has owned the Puddlejumpers Children’s Shop for 25 years, was walking to her car one evening in August when she dropped her tote. That’s when a stuffed bank deposit bag fell out onto the grass, unbeknownst to her. (“My eyesight isn’t what it used to be,” she said.) And the next day, Guy Parenti and his son Max, 8, spotted it while walking their dog, amazed at the fat stack of twenties, fifties, and hundreds.

“This presented a teaching opportunity,” Parenti, an independent sales agent, told Yahoo Shine. “I think [Max] said, ‘Are we going to keep it?’ And I said, ‘Keeping it is no different from taking it.’ He’s a great kid with a great heart, so he was all for it. He felt like one of the good guys.” Good guys have been happily trendy lately, according to various Good Samaritan news reports: Earlier this month, a Boston homeless man became a celebrated local hero after he found a backpack containing tens of thousands of dollars in cash and travelers checks, turning it right over the police. Also this year, a Tennessee man found $13,000 on top of a trash can, an auto-detailing shop owner in Missouri found $1,200 in cash, a California couple found $6,900 in an envelope at a DMV office, and an out-of-work teacher in Texas stumbled upon a bag containing $20,000 in cash. In every remarkable case, the money was returned to its owner or handed over to police.

As for Max and his dad, they waited until they got home to count the cash and then noticed a deposit slip, which Guy knew would be helpful to the police. Together, they brought it into the Exeter police station the next morning.

“The police made a really big deal out of it, congratulating him, which was great,” Parenti said about Max’s reception. “He was very proud of himself.”

The officers, able to track Smith down through her bank’s routing number, called her with the good news. She collected her cash and eventually brought the card and reward into the precinct for Max, admitting that she used the cops as middlemen because she was “a little embarrassed” by the whole incident.

“I’m a firm believer in karma,” she added, “so I think Max has a lot of good things coming his way.”

He at least has some sweets in his near future, according to his dad, who shared what Max planned to do with his reward money. “The last I heard, believe it or not,” he said, “he wants to buy Pixie Stix.”
